Frequently
Asked
Questions
What is Made to Measure?
Made-to-measure is a method of creation where a pre-existing pattern is modified to your body. Off-the-rack uses generic patterns with no customization, and bespoke builds an entirely new pattern from scratch. MTM sits in the middle — giving you a custom fit and design details without going full bespoke.
How much do 1701 Bespoke Made to Measure Suits Cost?
Our MTM suits range from $2,500 to $8,000. The difference comes down to fabric. We carry everything from robust workhorse cloths for daily wear to luxury blends with cashmere and silk. The fit and service are the same — the fabric is what sets the price.
How Many Fittings Are There?
Typically three:
– First fitting: we take your measurements, put you in a try-on garment, and study how it drapes. This is where we get your feedback on fit and style.
– Second fitting: about six weeks later, refinements are made through local alterations.
– Third fitting: final check. Most clients are finished here, though if more adjustments are needed, we’ll do them.
How long does The Whole Process Take?
On average, six to eight weeks. Fabric choice and certain styling options can affect timing, but in general you should allocate 6 to 8 weeks.
If you’re designing a suit for a special event like a wedding, we recommend at least 10 weeks.
Where are Your Made to Measure Suits Made?
Our MTM suits are made in Italy, outside of Rome. We also offer a Made-in-USA option for clients who prefer domestic production.
Are your Suits Full Canvassed?
Yes. All of our MTM suits are fully canvassed. That means the chest and lapel mold naturally to your body over time. Surgeon cuffs and handwork in areas like the lapel, collar, and shoulders come standard.
What Other Made to Measure Items Do You Offer?
Shirts, tuxedos, overcoats, jeans, knitwear, and custom shoes are all available in MTM.
Do You Keep My Measurements on File?
Yes. Once we have your measurements, reordering is simple. You can even book a virtual appointment to browse new fabrics without another in-person fitting.
Are Made to Measure Suits Worth It?
The fit alone makes it worth it. Off-the-rack suits can’t be adjusted for posture, balance, or button stance — MTM can. You also get more control over style and access to fabrics that aren’t available in department stores.
The result is a suit that feels and looks like it was meant for you.
Are Made to Measure Suits Just for Skinny Guys?
Not at all. Bigger builds often see the biggest difference. Lower button points elongate the torso, high-rise trousers slim the waist, and adjustments in the thigh make the suit more comfortable while keeping the lines sharp. MTM brings proportion and comfort to any frame.
Are There Different Styles That Complement Different Body Types?
Yes. Padded shoulders can help balance sloped frames, while a fuller cut can make a slimmer build look stronger. A higher trouser rise can streamline a larger stomach. Every body type has design details that make it look its best.
We pride ourselves on our expertise to be able to make recommendations for styles and to complement your unique body type, so you look better than ever before.
Will the suit be cut to allow freedom of movement, or is it just about appearance?
A suit that feels uncomfortable means it doesn’t fit well.
A well-made MTM suit should feel like a second skin. You can wear it all day without wanting to unbutton your jacket or take it off. It moves with you, not against you.
What Are Some of the Details I Can Choose with a Made-to-Measure Suit?
Closure type (two-button, double-breasted, three-roll-two), lapel style and width, pocket style, shoulder construction, trouser waistband design, pleats or flat front, cuffs or no cuffs, fabric, lining, and buttons.
Not to mention how the suit fits overall and what style you want to achieve.
Do you cut the suit to current trends or timeless style?
We lean towards timeless so your suit still looks good a decade from now.
That said, if you want something more trend-driven, we can cut it that way, too. It’s always your choice.
How Long Do Made to Measure Suits Last?
With proper care, 10+ years is normal.
The key is avoiding too much dry-cleaning, hanging it properly after wear, and storing it in a garment bag on a proper hanger.
What type of fabrics do you offer?
We have thousands of fabrics with different makeups like wool, cotton, linen, cashmere and silk, as well as traditional and unique fabric patterns.
We refresh the collection twice a year with cloths from the best English and Italian mills in the world. Whether you need something durable for weekly wear or a luxury cloth for special occasions, we’ll help you pick the right one.
What are the best summer fabrics for a suit?
Lightweight fabrics under 230 grams if you’re looking for wool. But you might also want to consider other fabrics like linen, cotton, mohair, and silk blends.
Each one has its own benefits for breathability, drape, and look. When it’s time to choose your fabrics, we’ll give you a foundational education and help you choose the right fabric for you.
What Are The Best Winter Fabrics for a Suit?
Heavier cloths over 280 grams for wool.
Wool-cashmere blends are also common for winter, as well as flannel being a classic winter choice for warmth and comfort.
How Do Your Fabrics Differ from Off-The-Rack Suits?
Off-the-rack fabrics are made for everyone, all year.
MTM fabrics are chosen for your lifestyle.
You get options designed for specific seasons, occasions, and comfort levels and are able to pick something unique that truly reflects your style.
What Are The Best Fabrics For Travelling?
High-twist or double-twist wool is ideal. These yarns spring back from wrinkles and hold up well after long wear.
You may also want to consider mohair. Mohair fabrics add strength and breathability with a beautiful sheen.
Lastly, stretch blends add comfort on the move, which is great if you’re sitting on a plane all day.
How Often Do You Refresh Your Fabrics?
Twice a year — spring/summer and fall/winter. Each drop includes seasonal cloths and versatile year-round options.
Do You Help Guide Me Through Your Thousands of Fabrics?
Yes. We always start with an education on fabrics so you understand what you’re choosing. The goal is not just picking a cloth, but appreciating why it works for you.
What’s Better: Italian or English Fabrics?
English fabrics are heavier, robust, and traditional. Italian fabrics are lighter, softer, and often have a subtle sheen.
While there are exceptions to this, in general I’m looking at English fabrics for my heavy winter suits and Italian fabrics for summer and year-round suits.
What Happens During My First Appointment?
We take your measurements, put you in a try-on garment, and see how it drapes. You’ll give feedback on comfort and style. Then we go through fabrics, giving you an education so you understand what you’re picking and why it fits your lifestyle.
Can I bring a friend, partner, or family member to my fitting?
Yes. Many clients bring partners or friends. Grooms often bring their fiancées to help pick a wedding suit, and some clients bring friends to design something unique.
Will I get one-on-one attention the whole time?
Yes. Fittings usually last an hour and are entirely focused on you. No rush, no distractions — just guidance and conversation about what works best.
Do you take the time to educate me so I actually understand my suit?
Always. Fit and fabric education are part of the process. The more you know, the more you appreciate the details and the decisions you’re making.
Can you help me build a long-term wardrobe strategy, not just one suit?
Yes. We can advise on colors and patterns that suit your complexion and show you how to build a collection where every piece works together. That way, you don’t just own suits — you own a wardrobe.
What makes working with 1701 different from shopping luxury brands?
We don’t push you into the most expensive fabric. We focus on what’s right for you, your lifestyle, and your goals. The education, the detail, and the one-on-one process are what set us apart.
Will I get to try on examples to help me visualize the final look?
Yes. At your first fitting, you’ll try on a garment that we pin and adjust. It gives you a clear idea of how the finished suit will look and feel before we cut into fabric.
