The Process in Detail
While it is 2026, the process of buying a custom suit online is still kind of new. So this article goes into the exact process, step-by-step on how you can get a custom suit online.

1. Schedule Call, Get Measured
The first step is to book your call. Choose a time when you can spend about an hour in a quiet, private room with a. computer and a webcam.
This is not going to be a webinar, but it will be a conversation. We’ll talk through fabrics together so make sure it’s not a place with too many distractions.
Once your video call is scheduled, you’ll receive a measurement form. You can either fill it out digitally on your phone or print it out and bring it with you.
Many people feel uneasy about taking their own measurements, or having a non-tailor do it for them. And they should be!
Proper measurements require an understanding of where to measure, why you’re measuring there, and how those numbers translate to clothing. It takes experience and repetition.
That’s why we recommend having a professional take your measurements. Bring the form (paper or phone) to your local alterations tailor and have them complete it for you.
Once your measurements are taken, submit them:
- If you used the digital form, you’re done; just show up for your call.
- If you used the paper form, enter your measurements here.
After submission, you’re ready for your call.
2. Video Call: Learn about fabrics and get one-on-one advice
Your video call is one-on-one with your personal clothier. You’ll always work with the same person, which means they begin to understand your style, your preferences, and how you actually use your clothes. Over time, that leads to better recommendations and fewer compromises.
The call starts with confirming measurements and getting to know each other. I usually begin by asking one simple question:
“What brings you in today?”
It’s intentionally open-ended. Most people don’t need help picking a color—they need help translating a situation into the right garment. The why matters far more than the what.
When I understand the purpose behind the suit, the advice gets much more precise.
For example, someone might say they want a green suit for a wedding in Northern Michigan. The wedding is in November, indoors, with an autumn feel. On the surface, that sounds like a simple request. But “green” alone could mean hundreds of fabrics that behave very differently.
Once I understand the setting, season, lighting, and formality, I can suggest specific cloths that fit the moment—fabrics the client likely wouldn’t have considered on their own.
This is the part most people underestimate about custom clothing. There are thousands of fabric options, and without guidance, it’s easy to choose something that looks good online but doesn’t wear well in real life.
Clients consistently tell me that outside of fit, this advisory process is the most valuable part of working together.
You’ll get direct, one-on-one guidance from someone who does this every day—and you’ll come away with a better understanding of fabrics and why certain choices work better than others.
3. Get Your Suitand Look Great
About two weeks before your garment is scheduled to arrive, you’ll receive a notification and we’ll schedule a follow-up appointment for shortly after delivery.
When your suit arrives, the expectation is that it will go to a local tailor for final finishing. This is standard in custom clothing and an intentional part of the process.
During your follow-up appointment, your clothier will review the fit with you in detail; how the jacket sits on your shoulders, how the trousers break, how the garment moves, and how it feels on your body. Any refinements that should be made will be clearly noted.
You’ll then take the suit to your tailor to have those final adjustments completed. 1701 Bespoke always covers the cost of alterations. We coordinate directly with your tailor and handle the bill, so there’s no guesswork or back-and-forth.
Once you’ve worn the suit a few times, we want your feedback. Fit preferences evolve as you live in your clothes, and that’s normal. Most first-time clients quickly learn that custom clothing is iterative. Each garment helps refine the next.
You’ll have direct access to your clothier for feedback, questions, and future adjustments. Over time, the process becomes simpler, the fit becomes more precise, and your wardrobe works better with less effort.
When it’s time for your next order, just reach out to your clothier and the two of you can come up with a plan to build out a versatile custom wardrobe.

We hold our fit to the highest standard and want to make sure you wherever your go, people say, “you look great!”
How do I know I’m choosing the right fabric without seeing it in person?
You’re guided through that decision by someone who works with these fabrics daily. Instead of choosing by color alone, selections are based on season, setting, wear frequency, and how the fabric performs in real life.
