Is Picking Fabrics Hard?

written by Max Schmidt

As you learn more about fabrics, you start to realize there are a lot of variables. Some fabrics work very well in certain conditions, but are completely wrong in others.

Take an extreme example; linen.

Linen is excellent for hot summer days because it wicks moisture away from your skin and breathes extremely well.

But wear linen in the winter time and you’ll freeze.

That’s obvious and extreme, but it illustrates the point: Fabrics are situational.

Choosing the right one depends on how, where, and how often you’ll wear the garment.

This kind of knowledge makes a huge difference when you’re building a wardrobe that actually fits your lifestyle.

Consider a young lawyer. He’s in court regularly, going to trial, and needs a s all rotation of dependable suits. If he’s shopping on his own, even if he’s lookin gat very nice and expensive options, he might choose the wrong fabric.

A very high super number, for example, can look and feel great, but wear out faster. That will leave him disappointed when it doesn’t hold up as well as cheaper suits he’s owned before.

This is where guidance matters.

Because this lawyer is just starting his wardrobe and will be wearing these suits often, I’d steer him toward a lower super number and a more durable construction. Ideally a double twisted yarn.

Good examples would be Hardy Minnis’ Fresco, Ariston’s 130s double-twisted fabrics, Carnet’s Sappers collection, or Loro Piana’s Helios collection.

Each of these collections have different characteristics, but all are built for frequent wear. When this is explained clearly, the client has a real advantage; he’s making informed decisions with professional guidance behind them.

You can make these choices on your own, but when you’re building a custom wardrobe, having expert advice makes this process faster, cleaner, and far more effective.
